Position Specific Description

We are seeking a highly self-motivated Data Scientist to join our AMI 2.0 strategic initiative, focusing on developing advanced disaggregation models and extracting grid insights from smart meter data. This role will be instrumental in maximizing the value of our existing AMI infrastructure as grid sensors while supporting the transition to next-generation metering technology. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to transform raw meter data into actionable intelligence that drives grid modernization and business growth objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

Advanced Analytics & Model Development

· Design and develop sophisticated disaggregation algorithms to identify individual appliance usage patterns from aggregated smart meter data

· Create machine learning models for AC anomaly detection and HVAC performance optimization

· Build predictive models for grid event analysis and meter response optimization

· Develop algorithms for enhanced load forecasting using high-resolution AMI data

AMI 2.0 Strategic Support

· Analyze baseline performance of existing meters to identify opportunities for enhanced grid sensing capabilities

· Support the enterprise cyber risk assessment through data-driven security insights

· Collaborate on AMI enhancements and distributed intelligence testing

· Contribute to ADMS integration improvements through advanced data analytics

Grid Intelligence & Insights

· Extract actionable insights from disaggregated AMI data to support regulated programs and customer engagement

· Develop analytics frameworks for program sales optimization

· Create real-time grid event detection and response models

· Build customer segmentation models based on energy usage patterns

Business Value Creation

· Partner with cross-functional teams to validate business cases through data analysis

· Support revenue generation initiatives by identifying high-value customer opportunities

· Develop performance metrics and KPIs for measuring Smart Grid 2.0 program success

· Provide data-driven recommendations for strategic technology investments

Technical Innovation & Testing

· Design and execute experiments for proof-of-concept development at the Meter Technology Center (MTC)

· Collaborate on iterative testing approaches with "fail fast, learn fast" methodology

· Support vendor evaluation and technology selection through analytical assessment

Required Qualifications

· 3+ years of experience in machine learning and advanced analytics

· Proficiency in Python, R, and SQL for data analysis and model development

· Experience with time series analysis and signal processing techniques

· Knowledge of utility operations and smart grid technologies preferred

Preferred Qualifications

· Master's in Data Science, Statistics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field

· Experience with energy disaggregation algorithms and non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM)

· Background in utility data analytics or grid modernization projects

· Familiarity with AMI systems, SCADA, and ADMS platforms

· Experience with distributed computing frameworks (Spark, Hadoop)

· Understanding of cybersecurity principles in utility environments

Technical Skills

· Advanced statistical modeling and machine learning techniques

· Big data analytics and cloud computing platforms

· Data visualization tools (Tableau, Power BI, or similar)

· Experience with IoT data streams and real-time analytics

· Knowledge of utility industry standards and protocols

Job Overview

This position is responsible for developing algorithms, modeling techniques, and optimization methods that support many aspects of NextEra and FPL business. Employees in this role use knowledge of machine learning, optimization, statistics, and applied mathematics along with abilities in software engineering with a focus on distributed computing and data storage infrastructure (e.g. “Big Data”).

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develops machine learning, optimization and other modeling solutions
  • Prepares comprehensive documented observations, analyses and interpretations of results including technical reports, summaries, protocols and quantitative analyses
  • Works with a variety of datasets, including timeseries data and “big data” requiring analysis on distributed computing platforms
  • Writes software in R, Python or similar languages and contributes code to product development teams
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned
